Phoenicopterus Ruber Plasticus Table

It was truly a sad day when we learned of the passing of Don Featherstone. While we didn't know his name before, his "contribution to society" has been a topic of many conversations over the years - not to mention the fund raising by local schools and service organizations that his creation has made......well, to be honest, donations made to keep his creation off your lawn......Anyway, Pat wanted to "do" a table in tribute of the man who created her arch nemesis - the plastic, pink flamingo. (Pat's husband has a five foot tall metal pink lawn flamingo which she is hiding in my garage hoping he will forget about it this year...and that is just the beginning of his collection...)

So Don, here's to you, the inventor of the infamous Phoenicopterus Ruber Plasticus (or more commonly known as the plastic pink flamingo):
Pat was terrified when I bought these a while back - fearing I would "add" to her husband's every expanding collection....

The table

Pat's husband made the centerpiece box for us....perfect for the flamingos which he graciously cut down to fit

The place setting

Flatware is the very popular "Bamboo" by Cambridge

What could be more "appropriate" than a plastic plate??? (Everyone knows I hate plastic plates....) Pat found them at a church rummage sale years ago.

A basic white plate to set off or "frame" the pink flamingos

Pat found a new color from Fusion spray paint - this one is called "Coral." Her sweet husband spray painted a dozen inexpensive lacquer chargers for us.

This versatile placemat is from Pier 1

Inexpensive Dollar Store green glasses

I am nuts about bread and butter plates - all different kinds and colors. I just love the look of them on a table. Between the two of us, Pat and I own 31 different colors of Fiesta bread and butter plates alone. When I found this "new" color at Replacements, I just had to have them (vintage Forest Green Fiesta 1951-1959).

What can be said about the centerpiece???? Well, the word "Gorgeous" does not come to mind....

From the other end of the table

Copy of the article from our local newspaper (maybe the entire community is a little nutty....nearly a quarter of a page spread....)

Where it came from:
Burlap Table Runner - Mail order from Linentablecloth.com
Leaf Placemats - Pier 1 last year
Coral Chargers - Inexpensive lacquer chargers from Michael's spray painted with Fusion plastic adhesive spray paint
Dinner Plate - "Shamrock" Fiesta by Homer Laughlin from Macy's
White Salad Plate - "Whiteware" by Food Network from Kohl's
Plastic Flamingo Plate - by Sakura purchased by Pat at a rummage sale years ago
Bread/Butter Plate - Vintage "Forest Green" Fiesta by Homer Laughlin from Replacements
Flatware - "Bamboo" by Cambridge from Ross
Glassware - from the Dollar Store
Candles and Greenery - from Michael's
Flamingos - "Original Featherstone's" from Ross

  1. I love this table!! I am a huge fan of flamingos and love the plastic yard birds very much. I too was sad to hear of Mr Featherstones passing. You inspired me to do a tribute of my own!

  4. Love me some flamingos!!!! and wishing I had these plates or even just the platter from your other blog.

FYI - looks like Fiesta is retiring another color, a store local to me has a blue color on clearance, sorry I don't know the exact name of the color.

  5. I love this table! I laughed out loud when I saw the centerpiece, but what a fitting tribute to what could be called the epitome of pop culture! You've honored Don Featherstone well. Those coral chargers are wonderful! In fact, the whole table explodes color and is a treat to see. Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

  6. I just had to laugh...I would be spray painting those flamingos in my yard a rusty brown or purple and adding gems and burlap so fast....well, when hubby wasn't looking. LOL Too cute!!

    Beautiful table ladies!
