Purple Fall Challenge

We are participating in Cuisine Kathleen's Fall "Purple Challenge" this week. So - let's get this out of the way. Here in Humboldt County, we are not famous for our Fall foliage of oranges, ambers, purples, and brown. We are famous for a bit more "green foliage" - it is harvest time here in our part of the Emerald Triangle. Millions of dollars in illegal and untaxed dollars are made - not to mention the horrific hazardous chemical pollution, the killing of innocent wildlife (and some human life along the way), the deforestation of our mountains and hills, the diversion of rivers and streams, and in this drought time, the huge theft of private water supplies. Did I mention the tons garbage and waste materials left at a marijuana site?

To us, it would not be appropriate to feature a "fall purple table" designed around our area.....so we are moving south a little....to the Napa Valley, where it is grape harvesting time.  It's lovely there and the tourists are arriving in droves for the annual grape stomping festival.

The place setting

Pat used ceramic handled purple "Fantasy" flatware by Noritake

A metallic purple water goblet and clear champagne glass for just a touch more theme color.....

One last look from the other end of the table

Of course, Betty had to dress in purple (notice Betty's dog? Pat changed the leash and collar so it would match. As always, attention to detail.....) And yes, that is still painter's tape on the wall. As most of you know, I put it up to show where a painting will go - when I decide what I want. It took me thirteen years to pick out the color of the house. Yeah, I know, I have a "bit of a problem" making that kind of decision.
Where it came from:
Tablecloth - from Linentablecloth.com
Purple Flatware - "Purple Fantasy" (1972-1977) by Noritake from eBay and Replacements
Chargers and Dinner/Salad Plates - from Pier 1
Bread/Butter Plate - "Racine" by Hutschenreuther from Replacements
Gold Beaded Napkin and Napkin Ring - from Pier 1 two years ago
Purple Napkin - Handmade by Pat
Silk Flowers, Basket, and candles - from Michael's
Betty - a gift from my sister and her daughter years ago
Betty's Boa - JoAnn's Fabrics

  4. I agree about the annual harvest from Humboldt co. My son lives in Arcata and people don't understand when we say we don't get fall foliage in California. Plus we are in a serious drought situation. Most palm trees do not change color except to turn yellow or brown because they are dying for water. This table is so elegantly beautiful. I especially loved the centerpiece both you and Pat are miracle workers the way you two can transform a table's surface. You really outdid yourselves. this is just Fabulous.Susie

  7. Your table came out stunning, and just perfect for Kathleen's Purple Fall. I love the dishes, glasses, but you got me with the great Noritake flatware. I've never found purple flatware around here so far.... when I do, be sure I'll get it! The centerpiece is lovely too.

  8. It breaks my heart that all of that illegal activity is going on again this year. I have heard an old school chum speak of it, and it's just not right. You live in an area that has such wonderful natural beauty, and it's sinful that people just take advantage. Pitiful.....

You did a wonderful job with your challenge table, and I love it that you made lemonade out of lemons....or I guess that would be wine out of the sour grapes of where you actually live. :-) This has a really elegant look. The white helps to break up the color while the gold colors bring a real richness.

    Well done! Enjoy your weekend!

  9. I'm so sorry about all that's going on in your county. I would be disgusted, too. Your table, however, is lovely! This is just what I imagine a fall table in Napa would look like!! I love that centerpiece! Perfect!!
