Spode Buttercup Updated Tablescape

For this week's table, Pat took a page out of publisher Phyllis Hoffman's magazine, Southern Lady. Both Tea Time Magazine and Southern Lady are famous for their beautiful table settings. But most amazing is how they take old, classic dishware and "modernize" the place setting. Not always to my taste, the finished table is consistently a show stopper.

Well, our table this week uses classic Spode "Buttercup" in a new and very updated way - with lots of color and pizazz (can "Buttercup" really has pizazz????)  Anyway, Pat mixed a very sweet, old fashioned pattern with updated yellow and green colors for what she called "something different." She was tired of the traditional blue or brown accent colors that she had always used. Time for a change.....
Over view of the table - put your sunglasses on.....I finally got Pat to use "Buttercup" on a tablescape for the blog. Instead of her typical elegant and refined place settings with this pattern, she uses bright yellow!!

The place setting - you can see how sweet the dish pattern really is

Lime green flatware - instead of silver......

Pat used simple glassware to "tone down" the color a bit

The swirl candle holders hold 14" tapers

One of the really unique pieces in this pattern - a small, square butter dish and lid

The soup tureen is one of Pat's prized pieces. For what she paid for it, I should have armed guards.....please, let there be no earthquakes until I return it.

One last look from the other end of the table. FYI - the three cream soup bowls and liners at this end of the table are mine. They are not vintage like all the other "Buttercup." You can't really tell from the picture, but if you see them and hold them, you can tell.
Where it came from:
Yellow Chargers - Inexpensive lacquer chargers from Michael's spray painted with plastic adhesive spray paint
Dinnerware - Spode "Buttercup" (old backstamp 1924-1992) from Pat's collection and my cupboard
Water Glass - by Libby from the Dollar Store
Champagne Flute - "Selection" by Cris d'Arques from eBay
Flatware - inexpensive Cambridge flatware from Ross
Green Napkin - from Target years ago
Napkin Ring - PVC pipe cut into 1" rounds and spray painted with plastic adhesive spray paint
Yellow Vases - from Pat's collection
14" Tapers - from the Ferndale Emporium (a local boutique)
Yellow Candle Holders - from eBay

  1. Oh, yeah, baby....this table has real color pizazz!!! What a fun twist!!! I am a subscriber to "Celebrate" and "Southern Lady" magazines, and I like the way they sometimes revamp the look of classic china by adding different, updated accessories. You just took it to a whole other level!!! Heck, it's summertime....perfect time for pulling out the brighter hues of green and yellow from the china's design! Using the unadorned clear glassware would have been my choice, too, so as to not overwhelm. Perfect!

That tureen is a beauty, and I can see why you'd be a little bit nervous! It's gorgeous, though!!!

Really fun and energetic tablescape to share again! Have a terrific week!

  2. Those are some goregous dishes, the ruffled edge & baskweave detail are wonderful. I don't blame you for being nervous about the tureen, it's truly spectacular.
I'm a big fan of Southern Lady & Tea time as well. I find it odd and maybe a little sad that the west coast doesn't have anything genteel to offer in the way of publications.

    All the best,
    Mary

  3. I'm happy that you introduced me to some new magazines today! I also love how a classic pattern can be paired with modern accessories to make it suit a younger demographic. I think my favorite was the swirl candleholders -- very retro yet perfect with the Buttercup pattern.

  7. I'm sorry, I had a chuckle at your expense when you mentioned armed guards and earthquakes...too cute; I totally understand that tho. There are pieces that if hubby bump into or slam into the dishwasher, I just roll my eyes but there are some pieces I say "uhhh I'll do that one!" Because I can't exactly go down to the antique store and replace it easily...LOL

Love the pattern you used and the way you updated it. Plus those swirly yellow taper candle holders are so pretty!
