Spode Sampler Tablescape

With a box of Whitman's Sampler Chocolates, you don't have to decide on one kind of chocolate - you can try them all and never get tired of any one of them (never mind the calories, the high sugar content, the cholesterol). That's my tablescape logic, too - minus the "annoying" weight gain. The more dish patterns you have, the less likely you will be to tire of any one of them (Yes - it's just an excuse to buy more....but it works for me.)

Anyway, Pat finally broke down and took pity on me - I have wanted to do a "Sampler" table for a very long time. I know that it's contrary to every tablescaping "rule" and it drove Pat over the edge because things didn't match.....but I think that this week's table is stunning.  Pat managed to take totally different patterns and make them work together.

Over view of the table - to keep it from looking hodge-podge, Pat used the same glassware and flatware for each place setting

The flatware is "King James" - silverplate by Oneida

Glassware is from Pier 1

Confession time: We don't own any more than this one place setting in this pattern. It is my absolute favorite Spode pattern but it's costly and very hard to find. Someday, maybe....

Pat had "Indian Tree" lying around in the back of her cupboard - I nearly died......it's not one of her favorites but I think that it is fabulous.

Pat's Mother-in-Law started her on this pattern. Then her husband bought her a lot more....she gave me some "extras" and I bought some more. Now she has at least 20 place settings and I have 8 5-piece place settings

My Cousin bought my first few pieces of Pink Tower for me and then I couldn't stop....I now have eight 5-piece place settings of the "old backstamp." (As you can tell, all of my family members are "enablers" by contributing to my dish addiction......)

Pat had this pattern lying around, too.....I love it.

Fairy Dell is one of Spode's most popular patterns

"Irene" is not for the faint of heart - it is pretty bold and colorful.

To help tie the table together, Pat made big arrangements - the center arrangement is in a Sterling Silver Champagne bucket

The crystal candle holders are from Pat's collection

One last look from the other end of the table

  2. I love the green pattern the best too. It is beautiful. The Buttercup has been a favorite of mine for years, it is good to see it being used on a table. Of course all of the patterns are lovely, but certain patterns tend to find a place in my heart to that holds them dear.

  3. I'm with ya, girl...a "sampler" table is so cool because it offers each guest a chance to not only pick which is their favorite to sit, but to take time to look at all the others. It's a wonderment, and I think guests really enjoy it! You did the 100% right thing by giving each place setting the same flatware and glassware to make it all work beautifully with no regrets.

I love all of the patterns, but that "Rosebud Chintz" is my absolute favorite...although "Irene" is a close 2nd.!!! I particularly like the soft lines of the rims. Just beautiful! I sometimes hit the sample sales at one of the wholesale places I frequent, and I get sample place settings for dining alone or for doing just as you did here. I've only done one sampler table in my life, but it was a huge hit when I did. That was before I started tablescaping for my blog, so no pics. Makes me really wish I had taken photos!

Your centerpiece is beautiful and works really well with each place setting. I LOVE the silver vessel!!! Oh, my gosh...that thing is FAH-bulous!!! :-)

I'm so glad you hit up LTC!!! Great prices there, huh? And the variety is really great, too! They're having a 40% off sale on a few items right now. My husband has threatened me with deportation, excommunication, and after school detention if I buy one more thing before fall, so I'm hanging back. That's OK...I'll make up for it! :-)

Have a wonderful week, and thanks for demonstrating just how beautiful a "sampler" table can be. This sampler done right!!!

  5. Your tablescapes are always beautiful but this one is unique! Spode maybe my favorite designer of English china, then there is Royal Crown Derby, Royal Worcester,Minton, Shelley...... And so many others! I have also collected many Spode patterns over the years. I love Spode Bridal Rose and Lancaster cobalt which came from Spode when they were in full production at Stoke-on-Trent. We visited ther a few times and I love the factory.

  8. This is one of my favorite tables that you ladies have done! I love the idea of a sampler table, and I will try one of my own. All your patterns are exquisite and it's so much fun to get a peek at your fantastic collection of dishes. I'll bet you could do twenty more of these sampler tables and never repeat a place setting! Please do this again. It is a wonderful post! Rosie @ The Magic Hutch
